“Check that girl out!” Adam pulled my shoulder to bring my attention to a tall dark lady with a pair of thin-rimmed glasses in the restaurant.
“What do you think about her?” Adam said, seeking my approval to go ahead and chat with her.
“So…” He seemed rather disappointed at my reply. Maybe he was expecting me to offer him some words of motivation or something.
“You know I have a girlfriend. So I don’t think I’m supposed to be checking other girls out. You understand right?” I replied.
“Honestly you should chill out a bit. I don’t like when you talk like this. You’re not the first to be in a relationship. Just tell me if she’s hot or not,” he complained, swinging his arms around to add a little bit of drama.
“Why are you even scared of Anabelle?” He continued
“I’m not scared of Anabelle” I replied defensively.” I just don’t like it when she gets upset.”
“Yea yea, whatever. So should I go for it or not?” Adam asked.
“I think you should, she looks great.”
I watched Adam walk over to the girl and stop her right before she was about leaving while I idly played with the food on my plate.
He began discussing with the lady, and shortly afterward Adam pointed towards my direction. The lady looked at my direction and waved. I waved back and faked a smile as Adam pulled out his phone from his pocket to collect her number.
I honestly did not know why Adam couldn’t help it but add me to his conversation with girls he approached. I was sort of his wingman without even trying.
Just after he finished collecting her number, he did a weird dance step as he returned to our table.
“So her name is Yemisi and she’s a postgraduate student,” Adam said while he sat down.
“That’s awesome, but I don’t think you’re smart enough for her.” I teased.
Adam pretended as if he wanted to give me a punch, and I jerked backward.
“So can we get out of here.” I began packing my backpack.
“No way!” Adam shouted. He was so loud that the couple behind us turned their backs to find out what the alarm was about.
“I still have to get the phone number of that fine looking girl at the counter.” He stood up from the chair and began walking towards the lady at the counter.
Adam whispers something to her and she smiled.
My phone rang and it distracted me from the act Adam was about to display. Anabelle was the one calling.
I answered immediately. “Hey babe”
“Where are you,” she asked.
“I’m hanging out with Adam.”
“I told you that I don’t like Adam”
I kept quiet in order to avoid an argument.
“I want you to help me pick up some wet wipes from the supermarket. The ones I like” she added.
Adam returned just as I cut the call. He seemed unexcited compared to how he was before he left the table.
“So how did your conquest go?”
“She said she just saw me collecting Yemisi’s number,” Adam complained.
I laughed so hard that I almost fell off my chair.
” So what your plan?” I asked Adam who was turning back to catch another glimpse of the girl who had just rejected him.
“I’m coming back for her tomorrow!” He replied.
I shook my head sideways.
“I have to be going Adam, Anabelle wants me to get her something.”
“It’s still surprising how you let her stay at your place” he replied and gave an unpleasant look.
I smiled and stretched out my hand for a handshake.
Then I left the restaurant.
Searching through the isle of beauty products in the store, I sighted a familiar face some distance away from me. A lady.
Our eyes met and she waved at me. I waved back then she started walking towards me.
“Stanley right, she stretched out her right hand for a handshake”
“Uhmm….” I tried to recall her name.
“Yemisi,” she said.
“Oh yea, we met at the restaurant. Actually, you met my friend, Adam!” I replied excitedly. “What a coincidence” I added.
“Well, I was about leaving. see you some other time.” I said, then stretched out my hand for another handshake. But she opened her arms wide to receive a hug, so I gave her a hug instead.
I proceeded to the checkout counter and paid for the items.
On my way out, I dialed Anabelle’s numbers.
“You want anything else?” I asked.
“Yea. I would like some chocolates,” she said.
“Okay, I’ll get you some.”
I went back inside the store and searched through the section for confectionary.
There I came across Yemisi again. As soon as she saw me, she became excited.
“Are you following me?” She asked with a smile on her face while she picked up a packet of sweets.
“Certainly not!” I replied defensively, “I just forgot to get some chocolates.”
“Did your weird friend send you to spy on me?” She asked then she switched to a grin.
“Maybe,” I joked.
Pointing to a particular brand of chocolates she said, “You should get some of these, they are my favorite.”
She brought down two packets from the shelve and gave them to me.
We walked together toward the checkout counter.
“So what do you do Stanley?” She asked.
I was quite surprised she remembered my name.
“I’m a photographer, for a magazine,” I replied. “Adam told me you’re a postgraduate student” I added.
“Yeah, I’m studying for my masters,” she replied and smiled.
“So you’re a photographer,” she said stroking her chin. “I guess I might have some business for you soon. Pass me your complimentary card”
“I don’t have any of that here. How about you give me your number?” I replied
She stretched her hand and I gave her my phone. Then she called her phone with it and handed my phone back to me.
We both paid for our items and left the store.
I escorted her to where she parked. She entered her car, waved and drove off.
“So how’s it going with miss over there?”
I pointed to the girl over at the service counter in a restaurant while taking a sip of beer from the glass cup.
Adam covered his face with both of his hands.
“She still doesn’t want to give me her number,” he replied. “I’ve tried several times, I’ve even offered to take her out when she’s done with her shift. But she keeps ignoring me.”
“She’s a married woman you idiot,” I said.
“Is she?” Adam opened his mouth wide out of surprise. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
I smiled and took another sip from my cup.
“It was fun to watch you look silly,” I laughed.
Adam squeezed a piece of paper on the table and threw it towards my direction. I dodged and it hit one of the customers who sat behind us. We both pretended like nothing happened when he turned.
As we paid for our drinks and were about leaving, I got a call from Annabel.
“I forgot to tell you. I bumped into Yemisi at the store the other day,” I said to Adam who was waving to the girl at the counter who ignored his gesture.
“Oh really! She’s not picking my calls” he replied.
“She just called me.”
Adam raised his eyebrow, looking at me suspiciously.
“No no…It’s not what you think.” I tried to explain.
“I Told her I was into photography and stuff, and she has business for me. Strictly business”
“So when are you going to see her”
“I don’t know yet”
Adam gave me a fist bump as he got into his car and drove off.
I called Yemisi back. She picked up immediately
“Hey, you called. Is about the photoshoot?”
“Of course. She replied.”
“Yea, I’ve been expecting your call. How about we meet up at the studio and discuss”
“Studio….No…How about you come over to my place let’s discuss. I’ll text you the address.”
“Uhmm…..Okay. your place then”.
I looked at my car, it was very untidy. I hadn’t washed it in weeks.
I wouldn’t like to show up at a customers place with a ride like that, so I called Adam to give me a ride to Yemisi’s place. Probably he would be excited.
Adam, however, had work to do, and he didn’t even like the idea.
“Wouldn’t it be awkward considering she’d be ignoring my phone calls,” He said.
So, I quickly drove over to the car wash to get my car cleaned up.
“Anabelle wouldn’t like this,” I thought to myself as I parked in front of Yemisi’s house.
I felt a bit uncomfortable going to over Yemisi’s place.
Probably because of the way Anabelle gets quite insecure at times.
I pulled out my phone from my pocket and dialed her number.
“Hey babe, what are you up to?” I said immediately she pick the call.
“Work stuff, I’m really busy
“I’m going over to a female clients place to discuss work,” I said hoping to get a reaction from her.
“Alright I’ll talk to you later,” she said. I couldn’t tell if she was just busy or actually heard what I said.
I gave Yemisi a phone call and told her I was parked right in front of her house.
She came out after a few minutes wearing a really short gown. I tried hard not to stare.
Yemisi gave me a hug as I came down my car. She told me to follow her, and she walked ahead of me into the house.
Her hips swayed gently, side by side, as the short gown did justice to her figure.
She offered me a drink when we got into the house, which I politely declined.
“Don’t be shy,” she said. So I asked for water instead.
“I get bored at times,” Yemisi said as she handed me a glass of cold water.
“So, where would you like the photos taken,” I make a quick decision to change the topic
Ann sat beside me then brought out her phone to show me some old pictures of herself when she was younger.
“I used to model,” she said.
Her gown went further up exposing her thighs the more.
I took a deep breath and reminded myself of the importance of not reading meaning to things. However, I dropped my wallet between the both of us.
“This was my favorite,” Yemisi said as she handed me her phone with a picture of her in bikini posing by the beach.
“Do you like it,” she said, leaning closer and resting both of her hands on my laps.
“Uhh…..Yemisi…I don’t do this with my clients” I said.
The expression on her face changed. I could see that she was a bit disappointed.
“What do you mean,” she replied.
“I think we should keep this professional”.
“Are you saying that I’m trying to seduce you?” she said. Her tone showed she was in fact angry.
“I think you should leave my house, Stanley.”
“I don’t mean to sound rude Yemisi, but….”
“But what! Just leave.” She cut my statement as her tone was getting even higher.
I got up from the chair and left her house.
“what just happened?”
“Why did I have to jump into the unnecessary conclusion that she only wanted to seduce me despite warning myself not to read meanings into things.”
I felt embarrassed.”I guess I would have to avoid Yemisi for a while,” I said to myself
I started the engine of the car and drove off.
A few minutes from driving away, a phone call interrupted the music I was playing.
“Yemisi was the one calling”
“Oh my!” I slowly brought the car to a halt by the side of the road.
I picked the phone up just before it was about to stop ringing.
“You left your wallet at my place. You should come to pick it up or I’m going to throw it away!” Yemisi said and she cut the call
Damn! I had a lot of important stuff in that wallet. I had to pick it up. So much for avoiding Anabelle for a while.
I made a quick U-turn and drove as fast I could to her place.
When I parked, I called her immediately to let her know I was around but she cut the call.
I waited a while until she came out of her house with the wallet in her right hand, and just before she got close to me, she threw the wallet on the ground. Then like a runway model, she turned her back and walked away.
I picked up the wallet and followed behind her apologizing.
She paused at her doorstep and stood still.
“Yemisi, I’m so sorry for being a complete moron,” I said
She turned back to face me. Then she said, ” you’re worse than a moron,” and she giggled.
“Okay, you can come in let’s talked.”
I followed her inside and sat on the sofa while she stood.
“I am thinking of going back to modeling, and I need really good pictures to get back to it.”
“So what do you want,” I replied.
“You’re the pro, you should figure it out,” she said while striking a pose.
Her phone rang and she went inside to pick it up.
A few minutes later she came out again.”I think you should be going Stanley, It’s already dark” she said.
She escorted me to my car and gave me a hug.
I felt exhausted when I reached my apartment.
Anabelle was watching the news as I entered.
“Anabelle!” I called her name but She didn’t reply.
I quickly went to the bathroom, took a shower, and changed into my pajamas.
I laid down on the couch where Anabelle sat resting my head on her laps.
She pushed me away from her, and she got up from the chair.
Anabelle left for the bedroom while I got up from the couch and followed her after a few minutes.
She was already tucked in under the blanket. Her eyes were closed.
I tapped her a bit and asked her what the matter was, but she ignored me.
She screamed, “leave her alone,” as I tapped her the second time.
So I grabbed a pillow along with another blanket and went back to sleep on the couch.
I had already fallen asleep when Anabelle woke me up.
“We need to talk.” She said.
“Can’t we talk about whatever it is tomorrow. It’s late and I’m really tired.” I replied
“No! We need to talk now.” She put her hands on her waist as she stood in front of me.
“You’re getting me upset Anabelle! What do you even want to talk about?
“Where did you go to,” she asked.
“I told you I went to see a client”
“It’s a woman right?”
I guess I was already losing my patience when I told her ” Honestly, that’s none of your business.”
“I don’t trust you, Stanley.” She said, ” why did you return late last night. You didn’t even pick my call.”
“You didn’t call me.”
“So I’m a liar?” She replied.
“Anabelle, You’re so insecure and it’s annoying”
“Wait! Did you just say I’m insecure?” She was surprised. “I don’t even care anymore, you should have fun.” She said and went back into the room.
She came out fully dressed a few minutes later.
“Where are you going to this night,” I asked her but she Ignored me and left the apartment.
It was going to be a sunny day according to the weather forecast. I have the perfect Idea for Yemisi’s photoshoot.
I went into the kitchen to fix myself breakfast.
Since our last argument, Anabelle had been away for days.
We hadn’t even spoken to each other since the argument. I had already told myself that if she wasn’t going to apologize, I had no plan of doing so either.
I struggled to prepare jollof rice which I burnt in the process that morning.
I was supposed to pick Yemisi up from her place.
My photography gear was already in the car. As soon as I was ready, I got in the car and drove off.
I called Yemisi as I parked in front of her house and waited for her to come out.
She stepped out wearing a Jean short. She walked elegantly to the car.
Yemisi gave me a hug as she got in the car, and we drove over to a park.
The photoshoot went incredibly well. I even got some assistance from some passerby who held equipment as I took pictures.
We finished earlier than I expected and packed.
“what are you doing after now,” Yemisi asked just before I was about to start the engine of the car.
“nothing,” I replied.
“You’re such a boring person we should get some drinks to celebrate, there’s a bar around the corner.”
I declined initially but she insisted.
We got to a bar and we ordered a few drinks.
Yemisi sat really close and she began to flirt with me.
“Do you workout,” she said as she gripped my biceps with her hands.
“Not really,” I replied trying not to blush.
She stood up and said, “I’d like to see where you stay.”
Since Anabelle wasn’t around, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to let a friend visit. I told her OK.
We drove over to my place.
I joked about giving her a tour around my small apartment and Yemisi laughed all the way.
As we got to my bedroom, Yemisi reached for my lips and kiss me. It was as if I’d been put in a trance. I wanted to stop her and I wanted more.
The more we kissed the more intense it got. We pulled out clothes and made love.
“Honestly, I’ve been wanting to do this with you since.” She said as she got up from the bed and wore her clothes. “I loved it.”
“Even when you got upset at me?” I asked.
“You made me seem too desperate” she replied.
I smiled and offered to drop her off at her place. However, she declined and said she’ll call a taxi to pick her up instead.
She gave me a kiss and walked out of the room to the front door.
I followed behind to lock the door, and I returned back to bed afterward.
Just as I put the leftover jollof from the previous day in the microwave, I heard someone opening the front door.
I knew immediately that it was Anabelle because she had my spare key.
Anabelle leaned on the kitchen wall, her eyes filled with remorse while she looked at me.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
I folded my arms, it was fun watching Anabelle apologize.
I gave a cocky grin and asked, “For what?”
“For Overreacting,” she replied. Then her gaze fell downwards as she remained silent.
I laughed, stretched out my arms while she came closer for a hug.
“I’m sorry for not trying to explain better,” I said.
Anabelle left the kitchen while I continued dishing the meal out on a plate.
Shortly afterward, I could hear the loud thuds of Anabelle’s footsteps as she paced into the kitchen. She angrily threw something towards me as she entered which I dodged.
The object made a loud metallic sound when it struck the ground.
She held a golden earring to my face and said, “this is not mine, who owns it?”
“Oh no! Yemisi must have accidentally forgotten her earrings,” I thought.
I remain quiet.
Anabelle turned her back and left the kitchen.
I followed her as she went to the room and started packing some of the things she had left at my place.
I pleaded with her not to go as she moved from the corner of the room to another, packing her clothes into one of her small traveling bags.
She held the traveling bag on one hand and hand handbag on the other, which she hit me with when I tried to stop her from leaving the room.
Before she left the house, she turned to me and said: “I knew it!”
“But why was even begging Anabelle when I already had something with Yemisi now?” I thought to myself.
Besides Yemisi seemed nicer.
I went back into the kitchen to eat my breakfast I was making but I’d already lost my appetite.
I decided to give Yemisi a call.
“You left your earrings at my place”
“Should I bring them over for you”
“No, I’ll come to pick them up some other time”
“But I want to see you”
She giggles and after a pause, then she replied, “I don’t think so, my husband is around”
I was shocked.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were married?” I was getting furious.
“It’s not like we are dating, so how’s that your business? “I’ll talk to you later Stanley before my husband gets suspicious.” She replied and then cut the call.
I tried Anabelle’s number and texted her several times but no reply.
Well, Anabelle went ahead to date someone else despite my attempts to get back with her.
I stayed away from Yemisi for a while, Although we continued our affair afterward.
